Building End-User Computing Solutions with VMware View
New book by Mr Mike Laverick and Mr Barry Coombs which treats VMware desktop virtualization technology. It's a non profit projects by those two fellow bloggers, since the whole profit goes to UNICEF.
I don't think that I do have to introduce Mike Laverick (Elvis) to my readers since Mike's books are very well known books in the VMware communities. You certainly own Mike's book on vSphere 4 which is excellent and which is part of my collection. As he says, the life of a computer book is very short and it gets old very quickly. So get it now while it's hot.
You have a choice between an E-book in PDF format or hard copy. The hard copy is $10 more expensive. I just bought a copy. I've opted for a pdf, since it's more convenient to carry around then a hard copy. In fact I'm storing it in my dropbox account, as most of my PDF books and important files.
Hopefully I will catch up with Mike and Barry in Barcelona during VMworld 2012 to do some sort of interview perhaps..? Who knows… -:).
The book has 559 pages…
You can read the Mike's words on the release of the book on his blog here:
I do I’d like to thank my co-author, Barry Coombs. It was Barry who approached me shortly after completing my SRM 5.0 book with the idea to update my old View 4.5 guide to be View 4.6 piece. Back then it was small under-taking to retro fit the book with the new support for the “PCoIP Gateway Mode”. Then quite quickly it became clear that with View 5.0 being released we might as well go the whole hog. Anyway, without Barry’s interested I might have not even bothered with this book. Also I wanted to recognise that where I have the luxury of bags of free time during the day to write – Barry has to hold down a proper job, and house move at the same time. Well done, Barry!
We’d both like to take this opportunity to thank everyone one who has assisted in bringing this text to the Community.
We spent many long dark nights toiling away in our man-caves to complete this project. Barry would like to thank his wife Laura Coombs, and I would like to thank my long-term partner, Carmel Edwards – for all their support and patience during this time.
The book is about VMware View 5.1 and ThinApp 4.7.2 administration – and it takes in a wide scope of complementary technologies from the likes of Teradici, BitDefender and F5 Networks. Towards the end the focus switches away from virtual desktops to look at the future of end-user computing including VMware’s ThinApp Factory and Horizon Appliction Manager.
Barry's words on it…
I originally embarked on this project after Mike Laverick released his original View 4.5 authors edition manuscript, Mike was looking for someone to update it to View 4.6 whilst he was working on his SRM book, being up for a challenge I volunteered having never attempted to write a book before. Back then I never thought a year and a half later we would just be finishing.
This was for a number of reasons, initially my home lab was a big weakness when trying to run multiple desktops, causing many problems, after many upgrades I was finally in a lot better position to complete the content. Secondly trying to write a technical book and beat the manufacturers release schedule proved very difficult, with the View 4.6 book quick turning into a View 5.0 book and finally View 5.1, each time there was a new release the whole content of the book needed reviewing, each procedure recreating, screenshots retaking etc. Thirdly Mike and I had a very good catchup at VMworld Europe last year to discuss the book and agreed to add a lot more content than the previous manuscript contained, the result of this is a 188 page manuscript has now turned into a 559 page book, the final book also contains many other end user computing technologies such as ThinApp, Horizon Application Manager and ThinApp Factory.
