Microsoft Lync 2013 support
Microsoft Lync client on View destkops, with rich media services. PCoIP is supported.
The video support is on RDP or PCoIP protocols.
The Microsoft Lync 2013 client needs to be installed in the VM together with Lync VDI plugin. A View 5.2 agent needs to be installed in the VM which also has to run Windows 7 OS (with SP1 only).
Windows 8 Desktop Support
Now supported in VMware View, the Windows 8 is supported as a virtual desktop OS. Even if not many IT admins has jumped into the wagon from Microsoft, and deploys already Windows 8 in VDI. But many IT admins are preparing VDI projects and so having W8 as an OS is important.
Sparse Efficient Virtual Disks
As outlined in the beginning of my article, the sparse efficient disks are new in View 5.2. It is an automated mechanism to reclaim dead space from virtual disks.
The feature was a tech preview in View 5.1, and now it is part of View 5.2. Windows 8 aren't supported yet and the feature can be used on the OS disks only. You can click to enlarge to high-res format.
HTML 5 only Access
In order to use the HTML 5 browser access, the VM has to have installed the Blast component and the pool has to have the HTML access enabled. As you can see, it's just a simple checkbox during the configuration of a desktop pool.
Here is the View 5.2 HTML 5 access only screenshot. I've created one pool for W7 and another pool has W8 running.
Next screenshot shows the connection to the Windows 8 desktop through a Firefox browser from Ubuntu linux…. -:). Pretty cool stuff… Click to see high-res image.. Enjoy..
