VMware has released another major update – vCenter server 5.5 U1b. The release bring a new version of OpenSSL library which in the past was affected by Heartbleed. The release does not bring any new features, it's just a maintenance release.
On the top priority resolved issues is of course OpenSSL library which has been updated to versions openssl-0.9.8za, openssl-1.0.0m, and openssl-1.0.1h to address CVE-2014-0224.
The other fixes are related to host profiles configuration (answer file), and also VSAN where under certain conditions, VSAN storage providers might not be created automatically when VSAN gets initially enabled.
I could see on the update page that not only a vCenter Server 5.5 product got updated, but also vSphere Big Data Extensions 2.0 and VMware vCloud Director 5.5.1.2 (fixes OpenSSL as well). Users needs to update the VMware Client Integration Plug-in.
Perhaps there are other VMware products as well, but that's all I can confirm right now.
Quote from the release notes:
Fixes:
- Host profile answer file might not be applied when you reboot the ESXi host After you restart the vCenter services, if you use Auto Deploy to reboot a stateless ESXi host, the host profile answer file might not be applied to the ESXi host and the host configuration might fail. This issue occurs if the reference host is not available.
- Under certain conditions, Virtual SAN storage providers might not be created automatically after you enable Virtual SAN on a cluster When you enable Virtual SAN on a cluster, Virtual SAN might fail to automatically configure and register storage providers for the hosts in the cluster, even after you perform a resynchronization operation. This issue is resolved in this release. You can view the Virtual SAN storage providers after resynchronization. To resynchronize, click the synchronize icon in the Storage Providers tab.
Other VMware Patches.
Concerning ESXi patches, you might be interested by this patch in case you're running on NFS as it was previously recommended by VMware to hold the upgrades to the latest 5.5 release because of intermittent APD bug. This is now fixed with the patch below.
Important patch also concerning environments using NFS. Few days back VMware also released a patch for this issue as described in KB 2077360. The patch can be downloaded using VMware Update Manager or using VMware download page.
Note: Important to note that only vCenter server Windows version (and the VMRC plugin) was affected by heartbleed bug, not a Linux version (VCSA – vCenter server appliance). Users with VCSA only needs to update the VMRC plugin). You can see a nice video from VMware concerning a resolution procedure for vCenter server 5.5 U1.
