VMware released recently a new certification exam VCP-DCV 2020 based on the vSphere 7 product. Until now, to become VCP-DCV you had the option to pass VCP-DCV 2019 based on vSphere 6.7, which btw, is still a valid certification exam not expiring any time soon.
The VCP-DCV 2020 certification validates candidate skills to implement, manage, and troubleshoot a vSphere V7 infrastructure, using best practices to provide a powerful, flexible, and secure foundation for business agility that can accelerate the transformation to cloud computing.
The new exam costs $250. The duration is 130 minutes and there is 70 Questions. The passing score is 300. There are Single and Multiple Choice questions. The exam code is 2V0-21.20.
The Professional VMware vSphere 7.x Exam (2V0-21.20) will give you a title VMware Certified Professional – Data Center Virtualization 2020 certification.
What exams you can pass to become VCP-DCV 2020 if you hold no certification?
At first, get some experience with vSphere. Then you must attend mandatory training. There are 14 different trainings that you can choose from and that is entitled to give you the right to follow the path to VCP-DCV 2020.
Then you must pass one of the foundations exams (vSphere 6 foundations, 6.5 foundations or 6.7 foundations.). This one is easy, there is 105 min for it, you have 65 questions and the cost is $125.
Next step is to pass one of the Professional Data Center Virtualization Exams:

This statement is incorrect: “Then you must pass one of the foundations exams (vSphere 6 foundations, 6.5 foundations or 6.7 foundations.). This one is easy, there is 105 min for it, you have 65 questions and the cost is $125.” The 6.0 and 6.5 Foundations exams were retired in August 2019, so until they release a 7.0 Foundations exam, 6.7 is the only option.

Thanks Roy, In fact, I blatantly copied the information from VMware cert website which (apparently) was not yet updated… -:( Good to know.

Awesome information. Just passed my 6.7 Foundation, and very pleased to know that the 6.7 exam will get me a VCP DCV 2020!
SamuelR says
I can’t find this information. Can you please provide the source of it?

what are the different if you pass 6.7 – VCP-DCV 2020 and now vpshere 7 with the same
VCP-DCV-2020. it so confuse.
Vladan SEGET says
depends on your achievements already. For example if you are not certified at all, the 6.7 exam must preceded with the “foundation” exam. The v7 don’t have that requirements…
Sendil Ramalingam says
I am just starting with V7. I have no prior certification in VMware family. Can i prepare for V7 2020 directly.
Vladan SEGET says
Yes, the “Foundations” exam is not required. However, VMware Class is mandatory. Either in physical location or online. vSphere 7 Install, configure, manage for example… https://www.vladan.fr/go/vsphere7install

hello, i want to do the vcp-dcv 2020 and have no vcp cert before.
for my understanding:
when i want to do this with
6.7 -> i am only need the 2V0-21.19
7.0 -> i am only need the 2V0-21.20
in the new certification path is also an foundation exam required, but there isn’t one for the 7.x
https://www.vmware.com/content/dam/digitalmarketing/vmware/en/pdf/certification/vmware-certification-tracks-diagram.pdf
Vladan SEGET says
Correct, if you want to pass the VCP6.7-DCV you’ll need to go and pass the “foundation exam” before that.
SamuelR says
Greetings!
If I take 2V0-21.19 (VCP 6.7) exam will I get VCP-DCV-2020 (VCP 7.0)?
Vladan SEGET says
You’ll be certified VCP-DCV-2020
Zeljko says
I have read all about VCP here but one thing still confuses me a little bit… are there mandatory trainings for VCP 6.7 as they are for VCP 7 ?
Vladan SEGET says
Mandatory training, Yes. If you are willing to become VCP-DCV 2020 and pass the VCP7 exam, 2V0-21.20, you will not be required to pass the Foundation exam
Trav says
Hi Vladen, I hold a current CCNA and was looking to do the Network Virtualization track (NSX-T) and then at some point hop over to VCP-DC (7). On VMware’s site
vmware.com/education-services/certification/vcp-nv-nsxt.html it looks like there is no longer a Foundations exam required. Is this the case going forward? I had a look on
forums but might have missed answer and could see Foundations 6.7 was EOL 1-Aug-2021
Also, can this actually still be done? I cannot see the ability to inform VMware one holds a valid CCNA when looking under NV certs.
Vladan SEGET says
Travis, there is a foundation exam requirements for the 6.7 version. The 7.0 is not.
Carlos says
Hello,
I hold a vcp6-dcv and vcp6-dtm.
I want to take the 2v0-21.20 vSphere 7 exam.
This is without having to take the required course.
I talked to a VMware support guy and he stated that I could take the 2120 or the 2019 and certify.
I thought I would have to take a 6.5 exam, then the 7.
Anyone else in this situation?
Vladan SEGET says
It changes often. Curently with VCP6-DCV they want you (again) to sit the qualifying training. Then you must pass the latest VCP7-DCV exam (2V0-21.20). Try to play with the drop-down menu on the cert page and you’ll see the requirements.
carlos says
After reviewing my transcripts, I do hold a dcv 6.5. So I can test.
I will study up for the 2v0-21.20 after the new book comes out on March 18th.
I am going to take the Horizon 7.7 exam this week. This is to keep current.
Thanks.
