vSphere 4.1 will be announced the 13th of July.
The announcement is not official yet from the VMware Side, I'm referring to Virtualization.info, which announced the news. The new vSphere 4.1 will be officially announced the 13th of July 2010. Next Tuesday. Great news for the SMB market which did not benefit until now some advanced features present in vSphere Standard or Enterprise. The feature is called vMotion…. Yes. vMotion will be present in the vSphere 4.1 essentials plus package.
With vMotion you move and evacuate your VMs live without downtime to the next available server, and you're able to proceed with your hardware maintenance. When finished, you move your VMs back and continue your production with no downtime.
It's not clear yet if the tuesday's announcement will follow the immediate availability of the new release or it's just an announce that the new product will actually be released later on.
But already we could imagine the battle of hypervizors takes it to another level in the SMB market. Having VMware including vMotion inside the vSphere Essentials plus package brings some very interesting point and certainly will be helpful.
By having more features on the VMware's side it should be more easy to convict a potential customer, especially in the SMB market, going the Vmware's way instead of Citrix or Microsoft…. Which does not seems to be the case right now.
