It's already third release of Veeam Backup for Salesforce for Veeam which continues to cover more and more platforms. Veeam Backup for Salesforce 3.0 has been released. The v3 brings new features but also optimization and speed increase. It has on average 30% increase in backup speed and 45% decrease in API consumption during full and incremental backup, without data encryption enabled.
Salesforce is used internally at Veeam so the product is also developed to satisfy the internal needs, but then many large customers that are using Salesforce within their infrastructure.
This information came from a briefing call we had with all Veeam Vanguards, Veeam Legends and Veeam MVPs, about a week earlier. As the information was under NDA until the product release, we had time to create our blog posts. For me, personally, this is not something that is new for me, however I never had the opportunity to test the product itself so all the information here can be taken as a detailed report about the Veeam Backup for Salesforce 3.0.
Veeam Backup for Salesforce v3 – The Architecture
The architecture of Veeam Backup for Salesforce is a bit different from the Veeam Backup and Replication product. In fact those two do not have anything in common. It is a Linux based app, that uses PostgreSQL DB for storing data. After install, you'll copy a link to access the UI via web browser.
You can protect one or multiple Salesforce Organizations where you can protect separately the data, metadata and files.
The data will go into the PostgreSQL DB that is part of the same server or it can also be installed elsewhere (PaaS, cloud…). The files and metadata are stored on the same server, in different folders. In v3.0 you will be able to activate encryption.
The app is multi-tenant so you can have multiple organizations.
The product is also allowing to have different users (admin, backup operator, restore operator….). Images below are from the Veeam's briefing call.
The first backup is FULL, then incrementals. When selecting what to backup, the only possibility is to select the whole organization because all the time you have to protect the whole organization. Forever Incremental then only.
What's new in Veeam Backup for Salesforce 3.0
- Data archiving – Salesforce storage is expensive. Archiving allows you to save money, by deleting some data from Salesforce to shrink the footprint. Some organizations can become huge in size with too much data. With archiving you can avoid storage costs as Veeam has no archival storage costs. The archiving is also good for compliance reasons where after you delete some data that you were not suppose to (due to compliance reasons), you can still retrieve them from the archive, so you're good.
These policies automatically move data from the active production environment to existing backup storage, reducing the load on Salesforce while keeping the complete data structure intact. This process not only helps in controlling storage costs but also ensures that valuable data remains accessible. If archived data needs to be retrieved, it can be seamlessly restored to the live environment in just a few clicks, ensuring minimal disruption and quick access.
- Data encryption – also called Salesforce shield, means that all the data stored in the PostgreSQL (whether it is in AWS, Azure or elsewhere) will be encrypted. You can enable it through the UI. Customers can bring their own encryption keys but also keys generated on the server, as well as keys generated on AWS. You can use AWS Key Management Service or built-in encryption key for field-level encryption of backed up data in the database and files on the disk. Restore operators will not be able to see encrypted data.
In the backup policy, administrators specify objects, fields and files that will be encrypted on the fly before the data lands to the backups repository, so-called client-side encryption. Restore operator roles cannot view encrypted data from within the application. Database administrators and system administrators cannot view data from the backup repository.
- AI data pipeline – customers they have a possibility to drill down deep into the data within the DB and use their own tools to do analytics and prognosis. They can do that without touching the Salesforce and consuming the API calls, just based on the Veeam's DB.

The archive TAB allows you to create an archive policy. First you select the organization > Data > and the schedule.
Here, one interesting feature, for the archiving is to run the policy in a Test Mode. It means, that when activated, it won't touch the production DB. It will simply show you which data will be deleted from Salesforce and send to archiving. It's like a safeguard before you actually decide to delete, the software shows you what records will be affected.
Once validated you can go and uncheck the button in order to actually archive those selected records. We have seen a good demo from AZ….
And you also have a possibility to limit the API calls.
The next step is to verify permissions before running the archive policy.
Once we have done that, we can run the policy.
Final Words
Already of third iteration of the product which is definitely a good product for backing up Salesforce. With the possibility of archiving your data you saving costs on storage. You can now do a Salesforce data and metadata backup, reduce recovery times, and meet compliance demands. Users and admins willing to test it can download the free trial.
