Installation personalized of VMware Tools.
As I wrote in my previous article, sometimes when you're using third parties backup agents which installs itself inside of the VM (cause of Symantec BE 2010) there is a need for not installing the full package of vmware tools. You can proceed with a personalized install of VMware tools in case you need to install only some of the components of VMware Tools.
The use of VSS providers for quiescing the VMs OS is reserved for the third party backup tools, like the BE 2010 mentioned above so you cannot install VMware Volume Shadow Copy Support present from within the VMware tools at the same time because you'll end up having conflict that I explained too in my previous article.
But also, you have the possibility to include or exclude other components present in the VMware tools.
In the example below you'll see that you have a possibility when installing/updating VMware tools choose not to install VMware Volume Shadow Copy Support component.
There is a manual way too…
01) Delete the “VSS” folder from :\Program Files\VMware\VMware Tools\Drivers
02) Delete the VMware Snapshot Provider service from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\vmvss
03) Delete the VMware Snapshot Provider {564d7761-7265-2056-5353-2050726f7669} from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS\Providers
04) Reboot the guest machine (required)
