There has been new VMware Certification announced during VMworld 2012 San Francisco. Vmware is introducing new cloud certification and rebuilding a new certification roadmap.
What's new? A lot. Even the “old” VCP has become a fancy VCP-DCV (datacenter virtualization). So I'm VCP5-DCV now… -:). But Let's see what's changed and how the new VMware Certification Roadmap can affect future path of IT professionals and spin the head of existing ones…
There is clearly the need to become a specialist, take one or two options, from the four available, but I don't think that many of VMware admins can pretend for all four of them.
On the other hand it's a good opportunity to add another certification to your CV if you're already a VCP, because in this case there is no necessary to attend the VCP5 class.
There are some completely new certifications that has been announced there:
– VMware Certified Professional – Cloud (VCP-Cloud) (NEW)
– VMware Certified Professional 5 – Infrastructure as a Service (VCP5-IaaS)
– VMware Certified Advanced Professional – Cloud Infrastructure Design (VCAP-CID (NEW)
VMware Certified Professional – Cloud (VCP-Cloud) – It's a vCloud Director Exam. Install configure vCD, Administer Users, Roles, and Privileges in a vCloud. Configure and Administer vCenter Chargeback, vCloud Networking, and vCloud Organizations. Allocate and Manage vCloud Resources. Create and Administer vCloud Catalogs, monitor vCD and implementation.
There are two possible paths, depending if you're currently VCP5 or not.
Path 1: You're VCP5 – you can pass the VCP-IaaS exam and you're certified
Path 2: You're not VCP5 – you have to attend a qualifying course and then pass the VCP-Cloud exam.
The new VMware Certification Roadmap:
As you can see, there is a new Desktop Design Advanced Professional exam as well – VCAP-DTD. In this case, you'll have to be a VCP5-DT diploma before wanting to pass the VCAP-DTD exam. And in order to obtain the VCP-DT exam you'll have to have a VCP5 exam, for which as you might be doubting, the VCP Class is mandatory.
It's pretty logical. With the explosion the numbers of available VMware products on the market, I can see a good way for VMware admins to differentiate itself by specializing in technologies and products, which few years ago just weren't available.
