Nakivo quietly released 7.1 version of their flagship product Nakivo Backup And Replication. Nakivo has fast releasing cycle and with each new release there are new features added and bug fixed. We have previously reported about a release which supports Hyper-V but we did not know that the clustering wasn't supported. Now it is. In this post, we'll detail how Nakivo Backup and Replication 7.1 protects Hyper-V Clusters.
The 7.0 was a major release where the Hyper-V support for backup and backup copy jobs was added. Also, more efficiency has been added to the product by having a possibility to skip swap files and partitions. Other options, such as filter backup files (orphaned backups) that do not belong to any backup job or backups that are older than one year and delete them in a single click, were added to the product. Check our detailed post about v7.0 here.
As being said, the 7.1 release of Nakivo further enhances the Hyper-V backup and replication options now allowing to backup VMs which resides on clustered Hyper-V nodes. Just a small reminder for those who does not know much about Hyper-V clustering. A Hyper-V Failover Cluster is a group of Hyper-V servers (nodes) that can use the live migration to move running VMs between nodes in the cluster without downtime.
If one cluster node fails, its VMs can be automatically started on a different node of the cluster, the same way as with VMware High Availability (HA). NAKIVO Backup and Replication v7.1 can track the VMs moving between different nodes and protect those VM no matter on which node the VM is located.
It's possible to add individual VMs of the cluster or the whole Hyper-V Failover Cluster to VM backup and replication jobs. If the whole cluster is added, NAKIVO takes care of any changes happening within this “container” similar way as if you have several VMs within a folder which you're adding to your backup or replication job. New VMs are backed up, old (removed) VMs are excluded from the job.
Quote from the announce:
NAKIVO Backup & Replication offers the container protection feature: Customers can add an entire Hyper-V Failover Cluster to VM backup and replication jobs. When an entire Failover Cluster is protected, NAKIVO Backup & Replication will monitor the cluster contents and will automatically add all new VMs in the Failover Cluster to the job. This way, all important VMs will always be protected.
Nakivo is now able to support VMware, Hyper-V, and AWS EC2 environments.
Nakivo main features include:
Backups – agent-less backups, image-based and application-aware. (same for replication).
Fast Incremental backups – default settings is forever-incremental, LAN-free data transfer, network acceleration
Efficiency – exclusion of SWAP files and partitions, global backup deduplication, variable backup compression
Guaranteed Recovery – Instant backup verification with screenshots of test-recovered VMs, backup copy offsite/to the cloud
Faster recovery – instant recovery of VMs, individual files, folders, Exchange objects, Active Directory objects
