I thought I share this Free OpenSource PSiphon Client which allows to accces services which might be blocked by your corporate firewall or not available in your country. It's Free Open Source software called PSiphon which allows uncensored internet access or gets more secure access when you have to use public wi-fi too. It basically connects to a PSiphon servers located in different countries (you can choose a country or leave it on “Fastest Country”) and uses local HTTP/HTTPS proxy and a local SOCKS proxy. It Can also do a VPN for all traffic, not only the HTTP/HTTPs….
All data that goes through Psiphon is encrypted. This means that your ISP cannot see the content of your Internet traffic: web pages your browse, your chat messages, your uploads, etc. Your Psiphon client will automatically discover new Psiphon servers.
A perfect example for service which is not working in some countries is for example the Pandora music service. You get this nice message saying
Dear Visitor, We are deeply, deeply sorry to say that due to licensing constraints, we can no longer allow access to Pandora for listeners located outside of the U.S., Australia and New Zealand….
Kind of a message which is certainly very anoying. But PSiphon allows to bypass the limitation. When connect to PSiphon server your Public IP changes . PSiphon has servers in many different countries.
There is also a setting allowing to serve the country's web
The default settings is for “fastest country” but you can override that by simply clicking the drop-down menu and choosing another country from the list.
PSiphon can do VPN for you too…
Psiphon uses the L2TP/IPSec VPN protocol. Your network's firewall may not allow the use of VPNs. Your home router may not be configured to pass through this VPN protocol. You might need check your firewall settings to see that IPSec or L2TP pass-through is enabled. Your system’s IPSec Services may be disabled. You can check your service settings and enable this service to start automatically.
Also the VPN mode migt be slow.. If you don't need VPN and want just to use local HTTP/HTTPS proxy and a local SOCKS proxy it's perfectly fine for web surfing and using web services, like the one from Pandora -:).
Psiphon arefrom Canada and they function with advertisers. They do collect some informations, not many and not detailed informations like IP addresses. But they also have an Ad Free (paid) service.
User IP addresses are not collected by Psiphon servers in the normal course of operation. Psiphon does not require user accounts, so, by default, there is no collection of email addresses, usernames, or passwords. Event logs include timestamps, region codes (country and city), and non-identifying attributes including sponsor ID (determined by which Psiphon client build is used), client version, and protocol type. Page views are aggregated by time and/or session before being logged.
PSiphon is available for Windows and Android where iOS client is in Beta.
See the technical description on their blog. The Psiphon software and source code are free and open-source and are licensed under the GNU General Public License Version 3. Vladan,
In the article I miss the reason it’s offered for free. I cannot really imagine its not for profit in some way. Did you check their business model?

Stefan
