Readers of our blog know that I cover the SMB sector with a particular attention. We like products which are free (almost) or low cost, and which brings a great value for a customer. One of such backup products is Altaro which in its free version backups 2 VMs. Altaro product does work for mixed virtualization environments supporting VMware and Hyper-V environments. They have just released version 7 of their backup product. Altaro VM Backup 7 Released. So What's New?
We have covered quite a few topics for Altaro. They're growing with every release. You know when a company grows, it is a good sign. The newest release of Altaro brings Windows Server 2016 compatibility, and also a feature called Augmented Inline Deduplication, which improves backup and restore speed as well as produces a smaller size of backups. Inline deduplication is a process when data are deduplicated before written to disk. It will be interesting to test few backups and see how the solution is performing.
Altaro has a Windows based console which can connect to local or remote Altaro backup server. Screenshot from the lab.

It's the best deduplication in the industry, creating the smallest backup size. Augmented Inline deduplication runs across all backup jobs, no need to group VMs together (no use of post processing).

Altaro VM Backup 7 Released – What's New?
- Augmented Inline Deduplication – is running across all backup jobs.Inline deduplication is a process when data are deduplicated before written to disk.
- Boot From Backup – Allows you to restore quicker by booting VM you want to restore, directly from backup location allowing users to access data or application. VM Backup is restored via a background operation, back to the Hypervisor. Also, any new changes made to the booted VM.
- Lower storage requirements – Thanks to deduplication process, the backup file is smaller size compared to other backup vendors.
- Faster backups – the dedupe process eliminates duplicate bits before saving to disk (less data to transfer). Efficiency increases as more VM backups are added.
- Windows 2016 Support – Altaro supports Windows server 2016 with Hyper-V 2016. See the whole list of supported hypervisors here.
- New Look for Altaro Offsite Server – A completely redeveloped Backup Server, with a brand-new look, is the best tool around to manage your offsite backups. The Altaro Offsite Server is used to replicate VM backups to an offsite location. The Altaro Offsite Server can be connected to the machine running an instance of Altaro VM Backup both via LAN or WAN connection.
- Faster compression Algorithms – they leverage processors' multithreading and arithmetic abilities to give a boost to the backup speed and drastically lowers the CPU requirements of the backup process.
- (Upcoming) New Console (CMC) – VM Backup V7 will soon include the new and ground-breaking Cloud Management Console (CMC), which will allow to monitor and manage remotely all Altaro backup servers via a Web-based console.
