There has been a new release of WordPress 3.8 which is very cool as it introduces several new features and improvements. The 3.8 release has been named “Parker” in honor of Charlie Parker (Wiki) – bebop innovator.
One of the first ones which I'd like to point out is the modern new design. The admin dashboard got a complete facelift. The design is new, with simple and clean UI. More colors, and refined contrast. The color schemes can be changed from within your profile.

Typography got changed as well by using Open Sans which are optimized for desktop and mobile viewing. All Open Source.

WordPress is an Open source blogging software. I say blogging software, but you can use WordPress to design websites for compagnies, organizations or non proffit, as you would do with any other designing software. The advantage of WordPress is that it's very flexible and you can extend it with tons of plugins and enhancements.
You don't like the base templates? No problem, there are tons of others free themes at WordPress. My blog however runs on paid Genesis framework which I chosed because of it's quality and security.
My base theme – Genesis – uses then a child theme called Dynamik for Genesis allowing me to design the the homepage, or change a font or paragraphs more flexibly. There are tons of possible customizations I can do with Dynamik. Don't forget to checkout my WordPress Tips page!
With that said… Happy Blogging -:)
