ADCs have become a standard in load balancing solutions because they provide not only the load balancing services but also full Layer 7 Load Balancing with HTTP and SSL acceleration, Web App Firewalling (WAF) and other security features.
We recently reported on Snapt’s Nova Application Delivery Controller (ADC).
Snapt develops modern, software-only solutions for application delivery with load balancing, web acceleration, autoscaling, caching and security for critical services. These solutions are built for any platform, any network, and any scale.
In this post, we’ll focus on Snapt’s Nova ADC Community Edition, which allows you to get started for free.
Nova ADC Community Edition features:
Free up to 5 Active Nodes
The free version allows up to 5 nodes. If you want to have more than 5 nodes, you can select the Professional, Business or Enterprise edition. Deployment of new nodes is done via REST APIs, which you’ll be able to access fully even with the free Community Edition. The Nova API documentation is public, and there are many source code examples available if you want to learn.
Nova Destinations
Nova Destinations are DNS addresses that allow auto-scaling, traffic routing, disaster recovery, multi-cloud routing and more. The Community Edition is limited to 2 destinations while the Professional, Business and Enterprise editions of Nova provide 1 destination per 2 nodes.
Max Throughput
1Gbps. The Professional, Business or Enterprise editions provide unlimited throughput.
Max L7 RPS
This stands for maximum layer 7 requests per second (RPS). The Community Edition has a limit of 1,000. The Professional, Business and Enterprise editions are not limited.
Max SSL TPS
Secure Socket Layer (SSL) Transactions per Second (TPS) with a limitation of 1,000 TPS. The Professional, Business and Enterprise editions do not have a TPS limit.
Custom TCP load balancers
Nova allows you to create custom TCP load balancers by specifying which ports to map and where. You can create HTTP(S), SSL, DNS, API Gateway, Microsoft Exchange, RDP or MySQL ADCs.
Data Retention
Limited to 7 days. The Professional, Business or Enterprise editions provide the options of 30, 90 or 365 days of data retention.
SLA
While the Community Edition does not provide any kind of service level agreement for support response time, the Professional, Business and Enterprise editions provide 12-hour, 2-hour and 30-minute SLAs respectively.
All Nova ADC editions feature:
Autoscaling
One of the really cool features of Nova is that you are able to configure autoscalers. Autoscaling requires access to your cloud and uses your cloud credentials in order to automatically launch and destroy new Nova nodes. The system is able to make decisions regarding shutting down servers based on the last 10 minutes of information, and decisions regarding scaling-up servers based on the last 120 seconds of information. So, it can decide to scale-up or scale down completely autonomously 24/7.
Service Discovery
Nova supports native service discovery on cloud-native container platforms such as Kubernetes, Docker and more.
WAF
Security and integrity are assured via WAF (Web Application Firewall). Nova WAF protects against bots, scrapers, data leaks, spammers, SQL injections, XSS attacks, denial of service and much more. Nova WAF can be enabled on any HTTP/S Nova ADC via a single click. Your DevOps and IT Ops teams will have precise control over the security and monitoring of your modern applications with access to full API for alerts, ruleset changes and more.
