VMware Labs published a new free utility called vSphere Mobile Client allowing you to manage vSphere installation from a mobile device. For now, the utility can only be used by Android devices, but future releases should, as you imagine, allow iOS installation as well.
You'll be able to monitor, but also interact with your VMs. In fact, power operations for VM are supported. You'll be able to change the power state of a VM or restart it. You can locate the VM in your environment via searching.
Monitoring capabilities of the client will show resource usage of a VM in real time or a day, week, month or year back. There are CPU, Memory, Storage and Network usage counters.
You can also subscribe to any running task and receive a notification on your mobile device when the task finishes.
The contributors are Abhijith Prabhudev, Charalampos Pournaris, and Tihomir Mateev. All three from VMware.
In addition, the vSphere Mobile Client supports push notifications. You may wonder how does it work and how do you enable that? Here is what the contributors say about it. Note that you can download a PDF where you'll find detailed instructions about how to get things done.
Quote:
vSphere Mobile Client supports push notifications. In order to enable that functionality, a spring boot powered application runs inside a docker container. The purpose of the application is to communicate with vCenter servers and provide data to the mobile application (push notifications).
Features
- VM overview: Review the status of your VMs including state (powered on/off), resource usage and configuration information
- VM management: Change the power state of a VM or restart it. Locating the virtual machine to operate on can be done through search.
- Task monitoring: Subscribe to any running task and receive a notification on your mobile device upon task completion, even when your device is in-active or you have another application running on the foreground.
- Performance charts: Monitor the resource usage of a VM in real time or a day, week, month or year back. Counters include CPU, Memory, Storage and Network.
Please note that this is a “tech preview” release and as such:
This is a technical preview release and as such it only has a limited subset of the intended functionality. The team would be releasing updates with new features regularly, but our main task is to gather feedback so please do not hesitate to reach out to us.
VMware labs are great. The tools that are present there are, from time to time, picked up by vSphere team to be integrated into the vSphere suite.
What's supported and what's the system requirements?
- Supports mobile devices using Android version 4.4 (KitKat) or newer
- Supports mobile devices using iOS version 10 or newer
- No other mobile operating systems are currently supported
- For Notification Appliance – 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 14 GB storage
- An existing VC (version 6.0 or newer) installation (VCSA or Windows).
- Application is tested on the vCenter VCSA 6.5 GA release.
Final words
In the past, there was already a vSphere mobile client. I'm glad that this project was picked up again. I hope to see a full-featured product soon. Good job guys -:).
