A big news today from Zerto as they have just started ZertoCON 2018 in Boston, yesterday. Zerto announces IT Resilience Platform and Zerto 7. IT Resilience platform converges backup, DR, and cloud mobility into a single platform scalable platform.
We'll also talk about new Elastic Journal protection which is previewed during ZertoCON and which allows not only short-term data retention but also long-term data retention allowing to specify a recovery point in short/long term period.
Zerto has been around for a long time. Started as a simple DR, but an innovative solution, which provides very low RPO and RTO because of their continuous replication technology which does not leverage hypervisor's snapshots for replication.
The Zerto’s Virtual Replication Appliance (VRA) is looking into the VM's IO stream causing no overhead or performance problems. The VRA uses the vSphere APIs to see the data flowing from the VM each time there is a read or write operation. So each time the virtual machine writes to its virtual disks, the write command is captured, cloned, and sent to the recovery site.
This continuous data protection is fundamentally different from hypervisor's snapshots used by other backup and data protection vendors. This technology allows RPO times being very low and does not add an additional pressure on production environment during, because not using hypervisor's snapshots.
Zerto is announcing today a new IT Resilience Platform™ which converges Backup, Disaster Recovery, and Cloud Mobility solutions into a single, simple, scalable platform.
Technology Convergence
A data protection technology such as backup, disaster recovery, are converging. We use cloud a lot for backup or DR these days. Our applications are mobile, our workloads, we can place them on different places.
An It Resilience platform is based on a foundation of Continuous Data Protection (CDP) together with Orchestration and Automation which is built-in.
With a powerful analytics and control which gives you complete visibility across multi-site and multi-cloud environments.
Zerto 7 Preview
While Zerto 7 is previewed during ZertoCON 2018, the product is scheduled to ship only Q1 2019, but this does not take the interesting stuff away. We'll look into it in a sec. So far the pieces of information we have, they are only from the media kit, but we'll try to keep this post up to date with some fresh information from ZertoCON where the Zerto 7 is previewed.
Zerto 7 – The Features
Elastic Journal – One of the first new features announced from the Zerto 7 is the Elastic Journal which:
Combines the short and long-term retention into a continuous stream of recovery points with search and recovery across data, files or VMs from any point in time from 7 seconds to 7 years.
This would satisfy quite a few admins out there, IMHO.
Indexing and search – The indexing and search across on-premises or cloud will allow recovery for long and short-term retention. Whether you're replicating to another on-premises datacenter room or to the cloud, the search is global.
New Data protection Workflow – the data protection workflows, such as creating data protection groups, with VMs in it, shall be redesigned in Zerto 7. Provide more simplicity and fewer clicks.
More to come in Zerto 7:
Quote from the PR:
Zerto 7 will also introduce incremental copies, enhancements to its scale-out architecture and new on-premise and cloud repository targets.
Additional new capabilities to be added are:
- Prescriptive analytic capabilities of past performance to determine optimized business outcomes and answer the “what” is likely to happen with new “what if” capabilities
- GUI and simplified workflows to further enhance and simplify the user experience
Zerto, for up to now is the only vendor which leverages continuous data protection (CDP) possibilities for data protection.
