Nakivo has released a new version of their backup and replication product. Nakivo Backup and Replication 7.3 Release brings support for hardware deduplication appliances, such as EMC Data domain or HP StoreOnce and others. By using hardware deduplication appliances you'll basically not use the software-based implementation of deduplication built-in nakivo but the deduplication engine within the hardware appliance, for that particular backup target.
Nakivo's product can be installed on Windows system (physical or virtual), Linux (physical or virtual), but it's also distributed as a virtual appliance for VMware (OVA file) or Hyper-V or as an installation package for certain NAS hardware. Not even mentioning cloud options such as Amazon AWS where you can back up AWS EC2 Instances by creating a backup job that specifies which Instances should be backed up, where the backups should be located, how often the backup should occur, and what backup options should be used.
Those are many choices to fit into many virtual infrastructures. A very flexible product which grows over time. Every major release brings usually new features and improvements.
What's new in Nakivo Backup and Replication 7.3?

Screenshot from the UI shows the hardware deduplication support where you basically pass the deduplication to the hardware, instead of doing it within the Nakivo product itself. It is “per-backup-repo” setting.
The new backup repository complements the existing one mean ing customers can choose those two options:
- The regular backup repository, which is optimized for generic storage systems and performs forever-incremental VM backups along with global data deduplication and compression.
- The backup repository optimized for deduplication appliances with greatly improved backup speed.
The simplest deployment for vSphere is via the virtual appliance where you have both, the main software (director), the onboard transporter, and also preconfigured some built-in storage within the same VM.
Even the Free Edition automatically de-duplicates backup data across entire repository and keeps only unique blocks of data. Yes, there is a free edition of Nakivo, in case you were not aware.
The de-duplicated blocks are compressed to reduce space utilization even further. As a result, you’ll get up to a 30X storage space reduction for backup. For backup repositories getting low on space, de-duplication and compression is a must.
Since few releases, it’s now possible to “clean” backup repositories from orphaned backup files. It can happen that over time, you'll end up with some orphaned backup files because you have edited/deleted some jobs while keeping the backups. Also, It is possible to filter backup files (orphaned backups) that do not belong to any backup job or backups that are older than one year and delete them in a single click.
MS Exchange individual objects recovery support has been added few releases back as well. It allows you to browse, search, and recover Microsoft Exchange emails directly from compressed and deduplicated backups. This feature is agentless.
Wrap Up:
Nakivo can fit for small or larger installations. For larger shops, you have a choice to create a distributed architecture where you need to install the Director (the main Nakivo product) and Transporter on one site (main site), where at least one Transporter will be installed on every other site that you want to backup/replicate.
When deploying only a single site, both Director and Transported are “baked in” the main product and you only deploy those, unless you want to add additional transporters for larger installations. The Transporter is the product component that does all of the heavy-lifting, such as the actual backup operations, replication, and recovery, as well as data compression, deduplication, and encryption.
