VMware View is hot. It develops very fast and in some features is even ahead of the VMware Hypervizor. This video is from VMworld 2012 in San Francisco. It shows the developement of VMware View product, the new features introduced in View 5.1 and the shows also the new upcoming features of future releases of VMware View.
A features like View Storage Accelerator – CRBC Cache (tech preview) – where the possibility to cache the master image in memory produces even better results than putting this image on SSD storage. You'll be able to see the benefits of CRBC cache in less IOPS (peak: -80%; average: -45%) and also less bandwidth (peak: -45%: average: -25%). So faster desktop operations.
VCAI – View composer Array integration (tech preview) – offloading the snapshots of cloning of the desktops to the storage array. You don't use the hypervizor CPU for the operation, but the operation is conducted on the storage side.
Space Efficient (SE) Virtual Disks– Space Efficient Sparse Disk Format. This disk format has a new granular block allocation size of 4kb. (A redo log format used 512 bytes which was an issue for alignment and partial writes). I've outlined it in my article – VMware vSphere 5.1 – Virtual Hardware Version 9. The SE Sparse Disk will have the ability to reclaim dead space from within the Guest OS, so use less space at the end.
And the future is…… VMware Distributed Storage (tech preview) – It's another feature (upcoming) mentioned in this video. The VMware Distributed Storage, it is a hypervizor feature (not a virtual appliance), and will use local attached SSDs (JBOD) to create a shared storage (pic bellow). The flash infrastructure aggregates local SSD, and PCI-e flash cards as a ressource pool, which is available for VMs.
It's not an Appliance, no VM, but it will be “baked into the kernel”….
At the backend you'll need a 10Gb Ethernet switch for replication…..
