I installed a new VM of Windows 8 inside of my VMware Workstation 8
I thought that I'd share my experience of running Windows 8 (tech preview release) as a VM in my freshly installed VMware Workstation 8. In fact no tweaks are necessary. I just selected Windows 7 as a model and pointed it to the installation ISO which can be downloaded for free here.
I'm not saying anything in this video, just put a nice loop to play music… I hope that you'll enjoy… The new Workstation interface looks really nice and having the possibility to run other Operating systems on the same physical box is really flexible.
I must say, that I swapped to SSD on my laptop… so I can benefit great speed for my VMs while running VMware Workstation on the top of Windows 7 as an OS. Another thing, I just spotted that people running Windows 8 as a base system, even if it's a tech preview release, and tries to install VMware Workstation to run other VMs, they have a little issue when starting the workstation software.
A quick quote from Workstation blog as what to do as a workarround:
After installing Workstation 8 on Windows 8 you can do any one of the following:
1. Add your user to the to __vmware__ group
2. Run Workstation 8 in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP3
3. Run Workstation 8 as an administrator
We are investigating the root cause of this issue and will enable our customers to run Workstation 8 on Windows 8 without these work arounds as soon as possible!
And here is the promissed video I've done:
